Display

The Mi 4i comes with a 5 inch full HD IPS display with a 1920 by 1080 resolution. The large screen has a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch. This results in accurate color reproduction, neutral color temperatures and awesome viewing angles. Also, visibility in bright outdoor sunlight is fantastic thanks to Xiaomi’s adjustment technology that drastically improves visibility in bright sunlight. Called Sunlight Display, this technology lights up the darker pixels and makes pictures, videos and UI elements appear visible in bright sunlight. Thus, the display does not disappoint.

Interestingly, the Mi 4i’s pixel density is higher than that of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus that have pixel densities of 326 and 426 pixel per inch respectively. This is something that the Chinese phone maker was keen on pointing out during the phone’s launch. Also, the phone has a viewing angle of 178 degrees that makes it easy to view from the sides.

To make sure that the display does not smudge or scratch, Xiaomi equips the Mi 4i with Corning’s Concore scratch resistant glass. According to the manufacturer, the phone’s scratch resistant glass offers the same protection as the Gorilla Glass 3 glass. Hence, the display is less prone to scratches and smudges. Additionally, the scratch resistant glass makes the display appear thinner and more sensitive. Overall, the 5 inch touch screen display is not what you would expect to find in a phone within the Mi 4i’s price segment considering it as the best smartphone under 15000 Rs.

Design and Built

At first glance, the Xiaomi Mi 4i looks like the Redmi Note and features the same polycarbonate back as the latter. However, unlike the Redmi Note, the Mi 4i is more compact as it measures 138.1 inches by 69.9 inches and has a thickness of 7.8 mm. Although the Mi 4i lacks the aluminum frame and glossy plastic of its predecessor, its matte polycarbonate unibody design looks great. Furthermore, the polycarbonate body is light and is not prone to slipping. Also, the phone fits snugly in your hand thanks to its slightly curved edges and wraps.

Since the Mi 4i has a unibody design, its rear cover is not removable. The benefit of this is that the phone is more durable and less prone to internal damage. Apart from it being durable, this affordable flagship best mobile under 15000 Rs is also nice to hold and perfect for one hand use. The phone’s ease of use can be attributed to the placement of the power and volume buttons. The latter are located at the right edge of the phone and can easily be accessed using your thumb. The micro-USB port is located at the bottom edge while the 3.5 mm headset jack port sits on top of the phone’s frame. Also on the top right corner of the phone is an LED notification. As with all other Xiaomi devices, the Mi 4i has seven LED colors for you to select from for different kinds of notifications.

On the back are the main camera and the speaker outlet. The camera does not protrude and is flush with the back of the phone, which enhances grip. This phone is considered to be one of the best camera smartphone under 15000 Rs. The left edge holds two micro SIM card slots while the front side is dominated by the five inch display, which is flanked by three navigation keys at the bottom. The secondary camera occupies the top right corner of the phone’s front side. Despite its large screen, the Mi 4i is a compact and easy to use phone especially if you prefer phones that can be used on one hand.

User Interface and Software

Although the Mi 4i runs on the Android 5.0 lollipop OS it is based on the company’s own MIUI skin. The latter closely resembles Apple’s iOS and thus does not feature Google’s User Interface tweaks. Instead, Xiaomi opted for a simpler system that lacks an app drawer and maintains all the apps in the home screen. Thus, it is fair to say that the Chinese phone maker has succeeded in creating a best android phone under 15000 Rs that is not only nice to hold but is also easy to use.

Performance and Battery

For the Mi 4i, Xiamo settled on Qualcomm’s 64-bit 1.7 Ghz octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, which is backed by an Adreno 405 graphics card and 2 GB of RAM. Obviously, this is not the best or the fastest processor out there, but that is not to say that it is not capable. The performance of the Mi 4i is impressive to consider it as a best mobile phone under 15000 Rs. Towards this end, the phone handles gaming and multi-tasking exceptionally well. According to the manufacturer the phone is less susceptible to overheating. In truth, the phone does tend to get warm when performing processor intensive tasks. However, so do other smartphones in the market.

The 16 GB of storage that you get from the Mi 4i is not that impressive especially since the phone does not have a Micro SD slot. However, it is not something that you cannot live without. Regarding connectivity, the smartphone comes with several standard connectivity options. For starters, the phone is 4G LTE supported in certain markets, a prime example being India. However, in the US market the phone is restricted to the HSPA + connectivity on both the T-Mobile and AT&T networks.

One of the main things that set the Mi 4i apart from other budget smartphones is its high quality speaker and audio output. Even in the highest volume the sound it output does not get distorted. Additionally, thanks to the small bump on its back, the phone’s audio output does not get so muffled when placed on flat surfaces.

The Mi 4i has a 3,120 mAh battery that keeps the phone powered for four hours of intensive use with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and the brightness set at 90%. As such, the battery is more than capable of powering the phone for one full day of light use. If you are a heavy phone user worry not, as the phone has quick charging capabilities and is able to charge from 0 to 40 % in an hour.

Camera

Similar to the Mi 4 the Mi 4i has two cameras, a primary rear camera and a secondary front facing camera. The main rear camera is a 13 megapixels shooter with dual LED flash while the secondary front facing camera is a 5 megapixel camera that is great for taking photos. Both cameras take good photos particularly when using Xiaomi’s advanced HDR mode, making it one of the best camera mobile under 15000 Rs. The phone’s camera application is no different from that of other Xiaomi devices and offers a decent amount of manual control without being too overwhelming. The camera app is able to use the focus ring to adjust exposure even when in auto mode.
